Studies on Harmonic repetition in trance music

The stimuli used for the first trance listening experiment (investigating the effect of harmonic structure on enjoyment in uplifting trance music) can be downloaded here. More details on the experiment are described in:

Agres, K., Herremans, D., Bigo, L., & Conklin, D. (2017). Harmonic structure predicts the enjoyment of uplifting trance music. Frontiers in psychology, 7, 1999.

The follow-up experiment, in which the results of the previous study are reproduced and the connection between enjoyment and absorptive listening states is investigated, is described in the following book chapter:

Agres K, Herremans D, Bigo L, Conklin D. In Press. The impact of musical structure on enjoyment and absorptive listening states in trance music.

The stimuli used in the second listening experiment are available here.

The Uplifting Trance Anthem corpus contains 100 chord loops manually encoded by Agres et al. (2017) from 100 Uplifting Trance songs. Chord loops are limited to the anthem section of each song only. A loop is represented by a sequence of chords, each associated with a duration in bars, where a bar corresponds to 4 successive kicks. Chord symbols are represented in the corpus by a diatonic spelling of the root note {C, C#, Db,… B}, an additional bass note in the case of inverted chords, and the chord type, which is systematically reduced to minor or major. The corpus is available here.
